PMET Resources is developing the world-class Shaakichiuwaanaan hard rock lithium project in northern Quebec, Canada. Due to the remote location of the project and the desire to add value to raw materials within Canada, PMET investigated the opportunity to refine lithium concentrate onsite into a higher-value midstream product. Following a detailed technology assessment, Primero’s proprietary ALi® Technology was identified as the preferred solution for lithium carbonate production.
SCOPE
In 2025, Primero completed a trade-off study of mature hard rock lithium refining technologies for the Shaakichiuwaanaan project. The assessment identified ALi® as the optimal processing route due to its simple operation, low reagent consumption, high recoveries, low capital cost and elimination of dangerous chemicals.
Primero subsequently completed bench-scale testwork on PMET’s DMS concentrate. Testing achieved lithium recoveries exceeding 90% and produced battery-grade lithium carbonate on the first attempt. The results were used to support engineering studies.
HIGHLIGHTS
- ALi® selected as the preferred onsite refining technology
- Only 6 process steps compared to 12 for conventional acid bake refining
- No acid bake kilns, autoclaves or crystallisers required
- Low reagent consumption and no dangerous chemicals
- Lithium recoveries exceeding 90%
- Battery-grade lithium carbonate produced during initial testwork
- Reduced logistics costs through conversion of 6% lithia concentrate to 40% lithia lithium carbonate
- PEA study indicates onsite conversion costs lower than acid bake refineries in China
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions through electric calcination
- Ongoing metallurgical and engineering support from Primero
